Mobile Detailer vs Shop Detailer: What You're Actually Paying For

Both can do good work. But the price difference reflects real differences in equipment, environment, and accountability. Here's what's actually different.

Indoor detail shop work — Cadillac Escalade

We're a shop detailer. So obviously we have a bias. But the question we get most often is some version of "the guy in the parking lot will do my car for $80 — why am I paying more?"

Fair question. Here's the honest answer, including the cases where mobile is the right call.

What mobile detailers can do well

  • Basic exterior wash and wax — looks great, lasts a few weeks
  • Quick interior vacuum and surface wipe-down
  • Convenience — they come to your driveway or office parking lot
  • Cost — generally 30–50% cheaper than shop pricing

For a quick weekly clean on a daily-driver Civic you don't care that much about, a good mobile guy is fine. That's not the customer we're competing for.

Where mobile detailers can't go (it's about physics, not skill)

Water source

Mobile detailers use whatever water is at the house — usually hard tap water from a garden hose. When that water dries on your paint in the sun, it leaves mineral deposits called water spots. Over time those etch into the clear coat permanently.

We use de-ionized water (DI water) for the final rinse. DI water has no minerals, so it dries clean with zero spots. You can't run a DI water filtration system from a customer's garden hose. It requires plumbing and tanks that only live at a shop.

Working environment

Sun = wet paint dries faster than you can towel-dry it = water spots and product flash-off. Wind = airborne dust lands on wet wax. Pollen season in Michigan = good luck.

We work inside a temperature-controlled garage with filtered air. The vehicle is shaded, the temperature is consistent, the air is clean. None of this is possible in a driveway.

Lighting

You cannot see swirl marks, scratches, or paint defects without proper LED inspection lighting. Outdoor light doesn't show them. Garage lighting at the customer's house doesn't show them. Mobile detailers can do the work — they just can't see what they're working on.

This matters most for paint correction and ceramic coating prep, where missing a single section means defects get locked in.

Ceramic coating

Real ceramic coatings (SystemX, Ceramic Pro, etc.) require authorized installer status. The brands won't sell to mobile installers because the application environment isn't controlled. Anyone offering you a "ceramic coating" out of a van is either using a glorified spray sealant or applying real coating in conditions that void the warranty.

If you're paying for ceramic, get it done at an authorized installer's shop. Read more on our coating service →

Insurance

Most mobile detailers don't carry commercial general liability insurance. If they damage your paint, your trim, your interior, or worse — get hurt themselves on your property — you're left dealing with it. Ask any mobile detailer for proof of insurance. Most can't produce it.

We're fully insured. We'll send the certificate on request.

The pricing math

A mobile detailer charging $80 for a "full detail" is doing maybe 90 minutes of work with consumer-grade tools. We charge $199–239 for a Full Detail that includes 2–3 hours of work, commercial equipment, DI water, climate-controlled environment, and full insurance.

Per hour, the pricing is roughly the same. The difference is what you get for each hour of work. Whether that difference matters depends entirely on what you're trying to achieve.

When you should use a mobile detailer

  • Weekly maintenance washes between deeper services
  • Cars you don't really care about long-term
  • You truly can't bring the car to a shop
  • The price gap matters more to you than the quality gap

When you should use a shop

  • Anything involving paint correction or ceramic coating
  • Deep interior reset (steam, leather conditioning, odor removal)
  • Vehicles you want to keep looking new for years
  • Pre-sale prep where presentation drives resale price
  • Cars where you'd be upset if anything went wrong (luxury, performance, sentimental)
